Arlington Bowie's
Steven Valadez rushed onto the
field and kicked a 24-yard field goal with 16 seconds left to
give the Volunteers a 23-21 victory over Arlington Martin in
both team's District 4-5A opener at Cravens Field on Friday.
Bowie jumped out to a 20-0 lead midway throught the second
quarter, and held Martin to minus 1 yards of total offense in
the first quarter. But the Warriors got their ground game
rolling, ate up a lot of clock and took the lead with the
opening possession of the second half. Russell Bellomy's 6-yard
touchdown run with 6:20 left in the third was the lasting
scoring play until Valadez's kick.
Langston Williams set Bowie up at
its own 49 with a good punt return. A 20-yard pass from
Deric Davis to
Austin Whitaker was followed by a
Martin pass interference call. That was enough to get Bowie into
position for the win.
